Career And Technical Education Programs Of Study are meticulously crafted statewide initiatives designed to equip students for success in today’s global economy and meet the evolving demands of the workforce. These programs are aligned with rigorous industry and academic standards recognized both nationally and at the state level. Organized around career clusters, which group occupations and industries with shared core functions, CTE programs ensure students gain both academic knowledge and practical technical skills essential for college and career readiness. A cornerstone of CTE programs is the integration of work-based learning opportunities, such as internships, apprenticeships, clinical experiences, and industry-mentored projects, providing invaluable real-world experience. Furthermore, students have pathways to earn college credit and acquire industry-recognized credentials, including certifications and licenses, enhancing their employability and future prospects.
Maryland’s career and technical education programs of study are developed through strategic partnerships at the state and national levels, ensuring standardization across the state and providing teachers with ongoing professional learning opportunities. To maintain program relevance and rigor, the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) collaborates closely with businesses, higher education institutions, and local school systems. This collaboration provides continuous guidance and support for the development of CTE programs that are both rigorous and relevant, effectively preparing students for higher education and future careers. MSDE also works with these partners to expand CTE program offerings in high-demand STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). Local education agencies have the flexibility to implement state-designed CTE programs of study or develop local programs that meet the approval of the Division of Career and College Readiness, guided by established policies and procedures for continuous improvement.
