NJ CARES Program: Crisis Support for Developmental Disabilities in New Jersey

The Crisis Assessment Response and Enhanced Services (CARES) program, a service of Trinitas Regional Medical Center, is dedicated to assisting individuals throughout New Jersey who are experiencing mental health or behavioral crises and have developmental disabilities. Operating across the state, CARES provides crucial support to individuals, their families, and service providers directly within their communities.

CARES program staff are located in regional offices across New Jersey, ensuring they can reach and support individuals facing crises wherever they may be. This outreach includes direct consultation and assistance in various settings such as family homes, residential facilities, day programs, and hospital emergency rooms. The CARES team collaborates closely with clients, their families, support staff, and mental health professionals, offering a comprehensive suite of services:

  • On-site crisis consultation at homes, residences, day programs, and emergency departments.
  • Expert technical assistance for families, sponsors, and both developmental disability (DD) and mental health service providers.
  • Connection to essential resources and support networks.
  • Educational training sessions for individuals receiving services, their families, sponsors, and service providers.
  • Consultations within psychiatric inpatient units throughout New Jersey.

Launched in 2016 through a grant from the Division of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS), CARES evolved from the former Trinitas SCCAT program to enhance crisis intervention for adults aged 21 and older with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The program delivers immediate crisis response and stabilization services, offering support for up to 120 days.

For 24/7 access to the CARES program or to make a referral, please call our toll-free number: 888-393-3007.

Regardless of the time of day or night, a CARES clinician will answer your call to gather necessary information and guide you on the appropriate next steps. This may include immediate phone support or arranging an in-person meeting to assess the situation. Whether you are a friend, family member, or support staff calling on behalf of someone in crisis, CARES is ready to partner with you to understand the situation and deliver the necessary support and resources.
