The automotive industry is continuously evolving, and within it, the car care sector is experiencing remarkable growth. Did you know that the car wash and auto detailing business in the U.S. is a substantial $12-$14 billion industry? This robust market highlights the increasing demand for skilled professionals in car maintenance and aesthetics, making Car Detailing Programs more relevant than ever.
At the forefront of automotive education, Grand Rapids Community College (GRCC) is excited to announce its pioneering car detailing program. Spearheaded by Chad Lodenstein, head of the Automotive Department at GRCC’s School of Workforce Development, this program is set to equip students with the expertise needed to thrive in this expanding industry. Lodenstein, a GRCC alumnus himself, brings a wealth of experience, holding a bachelor’s degree in Automotive Management from Ferris State and years of industry experience before returning to GRCC as an instructor in 2002. His passion for automotive excellence and student success drives this innovative course.
“The current market conditions, especially the high value of used vehicles, mean people are increasingly investing in maintaining their existing cars,” Lodenstein explains. “Particularly in regions like the Midwest, where vehicles face harsh conditions, car detailing becomes a crucial investment. Protecting vehicles from salt and maintaining pristine interiors are key to preserving their value and longevity. This growing demand signifies excellent opportunities within the car detailing industry.” This insight underscores the timeliness and relevance of GRCC’s car detailing programs.
Lodenstein’s commitment to GRCC and its students is deeply rooted in his own positive experience at the college. “GRCC provided me with invaluable opportunities, and returning to teach here was driven by a desire to give back,” he states. “My primary goal is to see our students succeed, and this new car detailing course is perfectly aligned with that mission.” The program aims to open doors for students with varied interests, including those who may not be inclined towards traditional mechanic work.
The car detailing program is designed to be accessible and beneficial to a broad spectrum of students. “This course is crafted to appeal to individuals who may not envision themselves as mechanics,” Lodenstein elaborates. “It’s also a fantastic opportunity for those outside our automotive program. Business students, for example, might find this course invaluable if they’re considering launching their own detailing business or entering the car detailing sector. It’s also an excellent avenue for anyone seeking a profitable side hustle.” This versatility makes GRCC’s car detailing programs an attractive option for a diverse student body.
The new course comprises 45 contact hours, structured as one three-hour class per week over 15 weeks. The inception of this program was inspired by student feedback. “During a visit to a student on an internship, the suggestion for a detailing class arose,” Lodenstein recalls. “This sparked my interest, leading to research and the realization that car detailing was indeed a valuable addition to our offerings.” This proactive response to student needs highlights GRCC’s dedication to providing relevant and in-demand skills training.
To ensure the highest quality of instruction, Lodenstein himself underwent specialized training. He attended an intensive week-long course at CARETECH, a renowned detailing training center in North Carolina. This immersive experience covered a comprehensive range of detailing techniques, including interior and exterior cleaning, polishing, paint correction through sanding and leveling, and ceramic coatings application.
“The CARETECH course provided a robust framework for our program,” Lodenstein notes. “The structured approach and high-quality materials were impressive. Furthermore, CARETECH will serve as an invaluable ongoing resource for both myself and our students.” This commitment to continuous improvement and industry connections ensures that GRCC’s car detailing programs remain cutting-edge.
Reflecting on his experience as a student again, Lodenstein gained renewed empathy for his students’ learning journey. “Being back in the classroom was a powerful reminder of the demands on students,” he admits. “It reinforced the importance of being mindful of their workloads and the volume of new information they absorb. This experience enriches my teaching approach and enhances my ability to support student success in our car detailing programs.”
The development of this new program reflects GRCC’s commitment to staying relevant and responsive to industry needs. Lodenstein emphasizes, “In line with President Bill Pink’s vision, this car detailing course perfectly embodies our commitment to relevance and responsiveness. It meets current market demands and provides students with practical, sought-after skills.”
