Integrating your Genie garage door opener with your car’s built-in remote system, such as HomeLink or Car2U, offers unparalleled convenience. No more fumbling for a separate remote – control your garage door right from your vehicle. These in-car systems are powered directly by your car, eliminating the need for batteries and ensuring reliable operation every time you arrive home. Both HomeLink and Car2U are widely compatible with Genie garage door openers. HomeLink systems typically feature a single LED indicator, often accompanied by a house icon on the central button. Car2U systems are identifiable by three LED lights positioned above each button. This guide will walk you through programming both systems to your Genie opener, ensuring seamless access to your garage.
Programming Your HomeLink® System for Genie Openers
For detailed instructions in PDF format, you can refer to HomeLink Programming Guide. A helpful video tutorial is also available here.
Step 1: Clearing Existing HomeLink Programming
Before programming a new Genie garage door opener, it’s advisable to clear any previous settings from your HomeLink system. This ensures a clean slate for programming your Genie opener.
To clear HomeLink, press and hold the outermost buttons (usually button 1 and button 3) simultaneously. Keep holding them down until the HomeLink indicator light begins to blink slowly, and then rapidly. This process typically takes about 20 seconds. Once the indicator blinks rapidly, release both buttons.
NOTE: Clearing HomeLink will erase all previously programmed garage door openers and other devices.
Step 2: Training HomeLink with Your Genie Remote
Next, you need to train your HomeLink system to recognize the signal from your Genie garage door opener remote.
Select the HomeLink button you wish to use for your Genie garage door. Position your Genie remote approximately two inches away from the chosen HomeLink button. Press and hold the button on your Genie remote that you typically use to open your garage door. While keeping the Genie remote button pressed, immediately press and hold the selected HomeLink button. Continue holding both buttons until the HomeLink indicator light transitions from a slow blink to a rapid blink. Once the rapid blinking begins, release both buttons.
Step 3: Programming HomeLink to Your Genie Opener Unit
The final step involves programming your HomeLink system directly to your Genie garage door opener unit. The procedure varies slightly depending on whether you have a newer or older Genie model.
For Newer Genie Garage Door Openers (with a Program Button):
- Locate the PROGRAM button on your Genie garage door opener motor unit (powerhead). Press and hold this button until a round blue LED illuminates and stays on. Once lit, release the PROGRAM button. A long purple LED will then start to flash.
- Press and hold the HomeLink button you programmed in Step 2 for two seconds, then release. Repeat this process by pressing and holding the same HomeLink button again for another two seconds and release. The long LED on the opener unit will flash blue and then turn off.
- To finalize the programming, press the HomeLink button a few more times until your garage door begins to move.
For Older Genie Garage Door Openers (with a Learn Button):
- Find the learn code button on your Genie garage door opener powerhead. Press and release this button. A red LED indicator will start blinking.
- Immediately press and release the desired HomeLink button one time. The red LED on the opener unit will stop blinking and remain continuously lit.
- Press and release the same HomeLink button one more time. The red LED will turn off.
- Press the HomeLink button again to test the programming. Your garage door should now activate.

Step 2: Programming Car2U to Your Genie Opener
Programming Car2U to your Genie opener is similar to the HomeLink process, with slight variations depending on your Genie model’s age.
For Newer Genie Models (with a Program Button):
- Locate the PROGRAM button on your Genie garage door opener powerhead. Press and hold it until the round blue LED illuminates and stays on. Release the button. The long purple LED will start flashing.
- Press and hold the Car2U button you’ve chosen for your Genie opener for two seconds, then release. Repeat this press-and-hold for another two seconds and release. The long LED on the opener unit will flash blue and then turn off.
- Press the programmed Car2U button a few times to test if your garage door operates.
For Older Genie Models (with a Learn Button):
- Locate the learn code button on your Genie garage door opener powerhead. Press and release it. The red LED will begin to blink.
- Press and release the desired Car2U button one time. The red LED will stop blinking and become solid red.
- Press and release the same Car2U button again. The red LED will turn off.
- Test the programming by pressing the Car2U button again. Your garage door should now activate.
Step 3: Changing a Car2U Button’s Default for Genie Openers
If you wish to use button 2 or 3 for your Genie opener instead of the default button 1, you can easily change this setting.
- Press and hold buttons 1 and 3 together for just ONE SECOND and release. All three LEDs above the Car2U buttons will light up solid red.
- Now, press and hold the button you want to assign to your Genie opener (either button 2 or 3). While holding this button down, press and release button 1. Then, press and release button 1 again. The LED above the button you are holding (button 2 or 3) will flash.
- Release the button you held in step 2 and wait for the LED to stop flashing. That button is now programmed for your Genie opener. Repeat this step if you want to program another Car2U button for a second Genie opener.
