Integrating your Genie garage door opener with your car’s built-in remote system offers unparalleled convenience. No more fumbling for a separate remote – with systems like HomeLink and Car2U, you can control your garage door directly from your vehicle. These in-car technologies, typically found with three buttons located on your visor or the ceiling console, are powered by your car’s electrical system, eliminating the need for batteries and providing a reliable solution for accessing your garage. Genie garage door openers are fully compatible with both HomeLink and Car2U. HomeLink systems are characterized by a single LED indicator and often feature a house icon on the center button, while Car2U systems have three LED lights, one above each button. This guide will walk you through the process of Genie Garage Door Opener Car Programming for both HomeLink and Car2U systems, ensuring a seamless integration.
Programming Your HomeLink® System to Your Genie Opener
For detailed instructions in PDF format, you can refer to the HomeLink Programming Guide. A helpful video tutorial is also available here.
Step 1: Clearing the HomeLink System
Before programming a new garage door opener, it’s recommended to clear any existing programs from your HomeLink system. This ensures a clean slate for your Genie garage door opener car programming.
- Press and hold the first and third buttons on your HomeLink system simultaneously.
- Keep holding until the indicator light on the HomeLink starts to blink slowly, and then rapidly. This process should take approximately 20 seconds.
- Once the indicator blinks rapidly, release both buttons. Your HomeLink system is now cleared and ready for programming.
NOTE: Clearing HomeLink will erase all previously programmed devices, so you will need to reprogram any other garage door openers or devices linked to your HomeLink system.
Step 2: Training HomeLink with Your Genie Remote
This step involves teaching your HomeLink system to recognize the signal from your Genie garage door opener remote.
- Select the HomeLink button you wish to use for your Genie garage door opener.
- Position your Genie hand-held remote approximately two inches away from the chosen HomeLink button in your car.
- Press and hold the button on your Genie remote.
- While still holding the Genie remote button, simultaneously press and hold the selected HomeLink button.
- Continue holding both buttons until the indicator light on the HomeLink system blinks slowly and then changes to a rapid blink.
- Once the indicator light is blinking rapidly, release both buttons. HomeLink has now learned the frequency from your Genie remote.
Step 3: Programming HomeLink to Your Genie Garage Door Opener
The final step connects your HomeLink system to your Genie garage door opener unit. The process varies slightly depending on whether you have a newer or older Genie model.
For Newer Genie Garage Door Openers (with a Program Button):
- Locate the PROGRAM button on your Genie garage door opener’s powerhead. This button is usually on the back of the unit, near where the power cord connects.
- Press and hold the PROGRAM button until the round blue LED indicator light turns ON. Then, release the button. The long purple LED will start flashing, indicating the opener is in programming mode.
- Press and hold the HomeLink button you programmed in Step 2 for two seconds and release.
- Press and hold the same HomeLink button again for two seconds and release.
- The long LED on the garage door opener will flash blue and then turn off, indicating successful learning.
- To finalize the programming, press the HomeLink button a few more times until your garage door begins to move.
For Older Genie Garage Door Openers (with a Learn Button):
- Find the learn code button on your Genie garage door opener powerhead. The location can vary depending on the model, but it’s often near the terminal screws for the wall button.
- Press and release the learn code button. A red LED indicator light will begin to blink, signaling that the opener is ready to learn.
- Immediately press the desired HomeLink button one time. The red LED light on the opener will stop blinking and remain on.
- Press the same HomeLink button a second time. The red LED will turn off.
