ECU Pulmonary Critical Care Fellowship: Advance Your Career in Critical Care Medicine

The Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine at the Brody School of Medicine, in collaboration with ECU Health Medical Center, proudly presents its fully accredited fellowship program in Pulmonary Disease and Critical Care Medicine. This comprehensive Ecu Pulmonary Critical Care Fellowship is designed to cultivate well-rounded physicians, adept at excelling in diverse professional environments, from academic institutions to private practice. Our graduates are consistently prepared to confidently undertake the American Board of Internal Medicine certification examinations in both Pulmonary Disease and Critical Care Medicine.

Our fellowship program is officially recognized by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), ensuring a high standard of training and education. The core objective of this ecu pulmonary critical care fellowship is to equip fellows with the complete spectrum of skills and knowledge essential for thriving in the multifaceted field of pulmonary and critical care medicine. We are committed to fostering an environment where our graduates are equally prepared to contribute to academic advancements and deliver exceptional patient care in private practice settings.

We offer a range of specialized training pathways to cater to varied career aspirations. These include a 3-year combined Pulmonary Disease and Critical Care Medicine program, as well as interdisciplinary 3-year combined programs integrating Critical Care Medicine with Nephrology, and Infectious Disease respectively. For those with a background in Emergency Medicine and Internal Medicine, we offer a unique 6-year combined program culminating in Critical Care Medicine expertise. Additionally, for physicians who have completed an accredited residency in fields such as Internal Medicine or Emergency Medicine, we provide a focused 2-year program dedicated solely to Critical Care Medicine.

The academic year within our ecu pulmonary critical care fellowship is structured into thirteen 4-week blocks, providing a balanced and immersive learning experience. The training encompasses three crucial components: core clinical rotations forming the bedrock of practical experience, a robust didactic education curriculum featuring conferences, interactive workshops, and advanced simulation exercises, and finally, significant engagement in scholarly activities and research. Central to our program is the close mentorship and supervision provided by our dedicated faculty, complemented by an extensive didactic program meticulously designed to enhance learning and professional development.

To foster essential cognitive skills, fellows actively participate in a wide array of conferences, both within our division and at extramural institutions. Furthermore, substantial self-directed learning through in-depth study of current literature and comprehensive textbooks is a cornerstone of our program. To complete their educational journey, fellows are expected to engage in diverse clinical and basic science research projects, with the explicit goal of presenting their findings at national medical meetings and achieving publication in reputable peer-reviewed journals. Research training is integrated throughout the fellowship, incorporating dedicated research rotations and extending across the entire duration of the program, ensuring a deep and longitudinal research experience.

Initially established as a two-year pulmonary disease fellowship in 1999, the program expanded in 2005 to a comprehensive three-year pulmonary disease and critical care medicine fellowship. Continuing its growth, in 2012, we further increased our intake to four fellows for the combined program and introduced a dedicated track for Critical Care, accommodating two fellows. In 2022, we significantly expanded the critical care track to include six fellows, encompassing combined tracks in Nephrology/CCM, ID/CCM, EMIMCCM, and a straight CCM pathway. Currently, our total fellow complement stands at 18, fostering a vibrant and diverse learning community.

Beyond clinical services, the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine is actively involved in a dynamic translational research program, primarily through the Lung Cell Biology Program, supported by multiple NIH grants and collaborations with corporate and device trials. Our fellows benefit from access to extensive laboratory facilities equipped with cutting-edge technologies. Key research areas of focus include Sarcoidosis and lung inflammation, Alveolar Proteinosis and related cytokine biology, and the intricate mechanisms of lung lipid homeostasis, providing rich opportunities for impactful research contributions.
