ChristianaCare General Surgery Residency: Featuring Dr. Leonard L. Mason III

Dr. Leonard L. Mason III, M.D., FACS, stands as a testament to the high caliber of professionals within the ChristianaCare Health Services program, particularly its General Surgery Residency. As a vital member of the ChristianaCare Medical-Dental Staff, Dr. Mason contributes significantly to both the Level 1 Trauma Program and Surgical Critical Care Services, embodying the program’s commitment to comprehensive surgical expertise.

His journey in medicine began at Temple University School of Medicine, followed by a formative General Surgery Residency at Rutgers-New Jersey Medical School. During his residency, Dr. Mason dedicated two years to trauma research, showcasing his commitment to advancing surgical knowledge. His dedication extends globally, with volunteer work on multiple international surgical missions across Guatemala, Haiti, and the Philippines, reflecting a profound sense of service.

Dr. Mason further honed his skills through a Trauma/Surgical Critical Care fellowship at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. This rigorous training culminated in board certifications in both General Surgery and Surgical Critical Care, solidifying his expertise. Prior to joining ChristianaCare, he served as a Trauma and Surgical Critical Care Attending at Temple University Hospital and held a Clinical Assistant Professorship of Surgery at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine, demonstrating his commitment to surgical education.

Since July 2020, Dr. Mason has been an integral part of ChristianaCare, serving as a Trauma and Surgical Critical Care Attending. His active involvement in esteemed organizations such as the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma and the American College of Surgeons, where he became a Fellow in 2019, underscores his dedication to surgical excellence. Dr. Mason is also a member of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia.

Beyond his clinical practice, Dr. Mason is actively engaged in surgical research and education, contributing to numerous projects and presentations. His publications include multiple book chapters, further highlighting his scholarly contributions. His surgical interests encompass general surgery, complex abdominal closures, surgical critical care, trauma outreach programs, and violence prevention, showcasing a broad and impactful dedication to surgical care and community well-being within the ChristianaCare Health Services framework.
