DuPage County Child Custody Exchange Program: Supporting Families Through Transitions

The Transitional Exchange Program offers crucial support for families navigating changes in parenting plans or moving away from court involvement. While many families adjust to new parenting time schedules smoothly, some require assistance to ensure a positive transition, particularly towards less restrictive arrangements. This program is designed to provide that necessary support by building strong relationships with both parents and children, facilitating effective communication, and aiding in conflict resolution. When needed, the program also serves as a communication bridge between legal teams and the court.

Operating with a similar structure to the Neutral Exchange process, the Transitional Exchange Program ensures children are moved between parents by Family Center staff, eliminating direct contact between parents. However, it expands upon this by incorporating additional time and increased staff involvement to facilitate a smoother family transition. Family Center staff actively engages with children and each parent individually to identify and address any emerging issues. Under court order, the Family Center can also provide the court with detailed written reports outlining observations and any significant issues identified during the family’s participation in the program.

The Transitional Exchange Program is intentionally designed as a short-term intervention. Families typically participate for around three months. Following this period, they may no longer require the Family Center’s services or may transition to the Neutral Exchange Program for continued support.
