ECU Health is actively investing in the future of healthcare in eastern North Carolina by nurturing local talent and providing students with valuable insights into diverse medical careers. Nancy Turner, workforce development program coordinator at ECU Health, highlighted the importance of these initiatives, stating, “It is such a joy to host these students and to expose them to so many interesting and important health care career opportunities available to them right here in eastern North Carolina. Our students are our future workforce at ECU Health, and partnerships like this are essential to ensuring we can care for our region.”
Driven by the commitment to grow healthcare expertise within the community, ECU Health recently hosted a career fair, offering students a firsthand look at the myriad of possibilities within the healthcare sector. This event is a cornerstone of ECU Health’s broader strategy to build a robust local healthcare workforce pipeline.
The career fair serves as a practical extension of programs like the Health Sciences Academy, a collaborative effort between ECU Health and local public schools. This academy is designed to equip young individuals in eastern North Carolina with the necessary education and resources to embark on fulfilling healthcare careers. Through a specialized curriculum, Health Sciences Academy students complete at least six courses focused on exploring various healthcare professions. Beyond classroom learning, the academy facilitates real-world experiences such as job shadowing, mentorship opportunities, internships, involvement in medical research, and volunteering, providing a comprehensive understanding of the healthcare landscape.
The Pitt County Health Sciences Academy exemplifies the power of community partnerships. It is a joint venture involving ECU Health, Pitt County Schools, Pitt Community College, East Carolina University (ECU), the Brody School of Medicine, and various colleges and schools within ECU, including the Colleges of Allied Health Sciences, Engineering, and Nursing, the School of Dental Medicine, the Eastern Area Health Education Center, and the Greenville-Pitt County Chamber of Commerce. These collaborations ensure a holistic and supportive ecosystem for students interested in pursuing health science careers, effectively acting as an informal Ecu Health Science Career Center in its scope and impact, guiding students from early education through to potential professional roles within ECU Health. This network provides invaluable support and guidance, making opportunities accessible and fostering a strong local healthcare workforce for the future.
