The East Carolina University (ECU) Sports Medicine Division stands at the forefront of primary care sports medicine, offering extensive educational opportunities focused on musculoskeletal medicine for medical students, residents, and fellows. Our programs are meticulously designed to provide a robust understanding of both acute and chronic musculoskeletal conditions, enhanced by advanced learning in biomechanics, orthotics, and cutting-edge procedural techniques utilizing ultrasound.
Sports Medicine Fellowship Program
Our esteemed Sports Medicine Fellowship provides a unique learning environment, enabling fellows to work directly with NCAA Division I athletes as well as a diverse range of community athletes. This immersive experience is coupled with the acquisition of advanced skills in diagnostic ultrasound and injection techniques, essential for modern sports medicine practice. Fellows gain expertise in biomechanical evaluations, learning to fashion custom orthotics to optimize patient care. A structured weekly didactic curriculum reinforces learning, covering a broad spectrum of musculoskeletal and sports medicine topics, ensuring a well-rounded and comprehensive education. For more detailed information about our fellowship, please visit the Sports Medicine Fellowship page.
Sports Medicine Residency Track
The Sports Medicine Residency Track offers a specialized pathway for Family Medicine residents at ECU. First-year residents with a passion for sports medicine can apply towards the end of their intern year to join this focused track. Highly motivated residents, typically one to three from each residency class, are selected to participate. The track integrates a weekly sports medicine continuity clinic into their schedule, as scheduling permits, allowing for consistent patient care and skill development. Residents also participate in the weekly didactic sessions, further enhancing their knowledge base. The ultimate goal of the residency track is to cultivate independent practitioners capable of providing comprehensive community sports medicine coverage.
Sports Medicine Rotation Opportunities
A Sports Medicine Rotation is a core component of the Family Medicine residency program, undertaken by all residents during their second year of training. We also welcome applications from outside medical students and residents seeking specialized sports medicine experience. These rotations, lasting two to four weeks, provide intensive exposure to the sports medicine clinic setting. Rotators will learn the essential skills in evaluating common musculoskeletal complaints and gain practical experience in palpation and ultrasound-guided injection techniques commonly used in sports medicine. Weekly sports medicine didactics, incorporating hands-on musculoskeletal exam skills teaching, complement the clinical experience, ensuring a well-rounded learning opportunity.
We are deeply committed to fostering the growth of our learners, enhancing their expertise and proficiency in sports medicine while underscoring the vital role of this specialty within primary care. Our dedication extends to continuous quality improvement, benefiting both our patients and the educational experience of our learners in primary care sports medicine.
