Home Depot Career Mobility Program: Empowering Military Transitions

The Home Depot, recognized as the world’s largest home improvement retailer, continues its strong commitment to the military community by offering robust career mobility programs. Building on this dedication, Home Depot proudly launched MISSION TRANSITION, an innovative online program designed to equip U.S. service members and women with the essential tools and knowledge needed for a successful transition into civilian careers.

Each year, approximately 200,000 service members transition out of the military. However, research from the Pew Research Center indicates that only a quarter of these veterans have secured civilian employment by the time they leave service. Recognizing this significant gap, Home Depot’s MISSION TRANSITION program directly addresses this challenge by providing easily accessible and comprehensive career resources.

MISSION TRANSITION features three self-paced online courses, each designed to be completed in under an hour. These courses are rich with tailored content, practical templates, realistic scenarios, and language that resonates with the unique experiences gained during a military career. The curriculum focuses on critical career development areas, including:

  • Optimize Your Resume: Learn how to effectively translate military skills and experience into a compelling civilian resume that captures the attention of hiring managers.
  • Build Your Personal Brand: Discover strategies to define and communicate your unique professional value proposition in the civilian job market, enhancing your visibility and appeal to potential employers.
  • What to Expect While Interviewing: Gain valuable insights into the civilian interview process, learn how to confidently articulate your strengths, and navigate common interview questions with poise and professionalism.

This invaluable program is offered entirely free of charge to the public and is readily available through The Home Depot’s career website: thd.co/missiontransition. This initiative underscores Home Depot’s dedication to providing tangible support and career mobility pathways for those transitioning from military service.

Tim Hourigan, Executive Vice President of Human Resources at Home Depot, emphasized the company’s deep-seated commitment, stating, “Supporting the military community is a priority for our company. We’re proud to launch MISSION TRANSITION online and provide transitioning service members with a convenient tool to help them confidently take the next step in their careers.”

Home Depot’s commitment extends beyond career programs. The company proudly employs over 470,000 associates, a significant portion of whom are veterans and military spouses, reflecting the company’s inclusive hiring practices and recognition of the skills and dedication of the military community. Furthermore, The Home Depot Foundation has invested over $475 million since 2011 in veteran causes, contributing to improving more than 55,000 veteran housing facilities. The Foundation continues its work with nonprofit partners to combat veteran homelessness through strategic initiatives, including funding programs that enhance veterans’ access to stable housing.
