Integrating your car’s built-in remote system with your garage door opener offers unparalleled convenience. HomeLink® is the most widely adopted technology that allows you to control your garage door directly from your vehicle’s interior buttons. However, programming your car to recognize your garage door opener, especially models like the Overhead Door Legacy 850, can sometimes seem complex.
Programming procedures are not universal; they depend on both your vehicle’s specifications and the model of your garage door opener. For the most accurate and vehicle-specific instructions, the HomeLink® website provides a dedicated resource. We recommend visiting their “Programming Your Vehicle” page.
Below, we provide specific programming guidance for Overhead Door garage door openers, with a focus on the Legacy 850 model.
Programming Newer Legacy 850 and Other Overhead Door Garage Door Openers
If you own a newer Overhead Door garage door opener, including Destiny®, Odyssey®, or Legacy® 850 models with a serial number starting with 11291 or higher, Overhead Door offers specific HomeLink® programming instructions. Please click here to access these guidelines.
Programming Older Legacy 850 Garage Door Openers (Serial Numbers Below 11291)
For Legacy 850 and other compatible Overhead Door garage door openers with serial numbers lower than 11291, please follow these steps to program your HomeLink® system:
-
Clear Existing Programming: Begin by pressing and holding the two outer HomeLink® buttons simultaneously until the indicator light starts to blink. Once blinking, release both buttons. This clears any previous programming.
-
Pair HomeLink® with Transmitter: Press and hold the HomeLink® button you wish to program and, at the same time, press and hold the transmit button on your garage door opener’s remote transmitter. Keep holding both buttons until the HomeLink® indicator light changes from a slow, steady blink to a rapid blink. This indicates successful programming.
-
Engage the Learn Code Button: Locate the “learn code” button on your Overhead Door garage door opener unit. This button is typically found under the light cover or on the rear panel of the opener, depending on your specific model.
-
Activate Learning Mode: Press the “learn code” button on the garage door opener. A red LED indicator light will usually illuminate and start blinking, signaling that the opener is in learning mode. You generally have about 30 seconds to complete the next step.
-
Finalize Programming from Vehicle: Immediately return to your vehicle and press the pre-programmed HomeLink® button four times, or until your garage door begins to operate. You might need to press and hold the button for a couple of seconds each time.
