For physicians passionate about prehospital care and emergency response, the ECU Emergency Medicine Department offers a robust and established EMS Fellowship program. This program, a leader in EMS education since 1990 and ACGME-accredited since 2013, provides comprehensive training across diverse EMS environments, preparing fellows to become leaders in the field and experts in utilizing resources like the Ecu Med Car in critical situations.
Comprehensive EMS Fellowship at ECU: Driving Excellence in Prehospital Medicine
The ECU EMS Fellowship is a one-year, ACGME-accredited program meticulously designed to cover the essential components of modern EMS. Through a combination of structured didactics, personalized mentorship, advanced simulation training, and extensive hands-on experience, the fellowship achieves its objectives of cultivating highly skilled EMS physicians. Fellows benefit from exposure to a wide spectrum of EMS models, including urban and rural systems, fire-based EMS, third-service EMS, and non-emergency transport agencies. This diverse training ensures graduates are well-versed in all facets of EMS operations and prepared to manage any challenge, from system design to direct patient care within an ecu med car or in the field.

A key strength of the ECU fellowship is its integration with ECU Health EastCare, a comprehensive critical care transport service. This experience encompasses both ground transport via ICU trucks and critical care air transport, providing fellows with invaluable exposure to advanced transport medicine. Furthermore, fellows actively participate in prehospital care and medical oversight through the Pitt County EMS Physician Response Vehicle. This direct involvement allows them to apply their knowledge in real-time scenarios and contribute to the quality of prehospital care delivery. Working alongside Pitt County’s Medical Director, fellows gain experience in provider education and quality assurance initiatives, shaping the future of EMS in the region and beyond, including the effective deployment and utilization of resources like the ecu med car for optimal patient outcomes.
In addition to the core experiences with Pitt County EMS and ECU Health EastCare, the fellowship offers unique opportunities to engage with EMS in various mass gathering settings. These include providing medical support at ECU home football games, deployments with the State Medical Assistance Team (SMAT), and participation in other mass gathering events. These experiences broaden the fellow’s perspective on EMS and preparedness for large-scale incidents, further enhancing their expertise beyond the typical ecu med car response scenario.
ECU and Greenville, NC: A Hub for Medical and Professional Growth
Fellows at ECU are appointed as Clinical Instructors at the Brody School of Medicine, integrating them into the academic environment and fostering their development as educators. Clinical responsibilities include shifts at both ECU Health Medical Center, a Level I Trauma Center with a large and busy ED, and ECU Health Beaufort Hospital, a full-service community hospital. This diverse clinical practice setting ensures fellows maintain and enhance their emergency medicine skills while focusing on their EMS specialization. ECU Health Medical Center, the flagship hospital for ECU Health and a major referral center for eastern North Carolina, sees approximately 125,000 ED visits annually, offering a high-volume, high-acuity environment for continued clinical development. ECU Health Beaufort provides a contrasting community hospital experience, expanding the fellow’s understanding of healthcare delivery in different settings. Both locations are integral to the fellow’s training and provide diverse patient populations and clinical challenges, complementing their focused EMS training and experience with resources like the ecu med car.
