McLaren Oakland MSU Internal Medicine Residency: Comprehensive Continuity Clinic Experience

The McLaren Oakland Hospital, in affiliation with Michigan State University (MSU), offers a robust Internal Medicine Residency Program committed to developing well-rounded and highly skilled physicians. A cornerstone of this program is the Continuity Clinic experience at Baybrooke Internal Medicine, designed to provide residents with invaluable hands-on training in outpatient care.

At Baybrooke Internal Medicine, residents are integrated as junior partners, affording them the unique opportunity to cultivate their own patient panel. This model empowers residents to deliver consistent, high-quality care while managing a spectrum of patient needs. The clinic serves as a crucial learning environment where residents gain proficiency in the long-term management of chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, and heart failure. Furthermore, residents are actively involved in preventative medicine, learning to implement strategies for health maintenance and disease prevention. The clinic also provides ample exposure to acute outpatient conditions, ensuring residents are adept at diagnosing and managing immediate health concerns in an ambulatory setting.

Beyond managing common medical conditions, the Baybrooke clinic emphasizes the development of procedural skills. Residents receive training and hands-on experience utilizing a Butterfly IQ for point-of-care ultrasounds, enhancing their diagnostic capabilities. They also become proficient in performing essential procedures including joint injections and aspirations for musculoskeletal conditions, cerumen removal and ear irrigation for otolaryngological issues, and skin biopsies for dermatological diagnoses.

The clinic’s patient population is drawn from Pontiac and the surrounding communities, offering residents a diverse patient mix and exposure to a broad range of medical presentations. All resident activities are conducted under the expert supervision of dedicated faculty. The Clinic Director, Dr. Robert Davis, provides direct oversight and mentorship. Dr. Davis brings a wealth of experience to the program. He is a graduate of St. George’s University of London, having completed his clinical years at the prestigious Sheba Medical Center, recognized globally for its excellence in healthcare. Dr. Davis completed his residency at Wellspan York Hospital in Pennsylvania and subsequently practiced as a Hospitalist at Henry Ford Hospital, specializing in advanced heart failure, structural heart disease, heart transplant, and lung transplant. He furthered his academic pursuits by completing an Academic Fellowship at Michigan State University in April 2023, before assuming his role at McLaren Oakland in August 2022.

Adding further depth to the faculty is Dr. Lyndsi Davenport, a part-time faculty member specializing in preventive medicine and chronic disease management. Dr. Davenport is an alumna of Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed her residency training at Genesys Regional Medical Center in Grand Blanc, MI. She also completed an Academic Fellowship at Michigan State University in October 2021, reinforcing the program’s strong academic ties.

The Continuity Clinic at Baybrooke Internal Medicine within the McLaren Oakland MSU Internal Medicine Residency Program provides a comprehensive and supportive environment for residents to develop their clinical skills, build patient relationships, and prepare for successful careers in internal medicine. The combination of hands-on experience, procedural training, and expert faculty mentorship ensures a high-quality educational experience for all residents.
